I am so sorry you had a bad experience at the St. Louis Cemetery Ms. Wise.

I too agree, it is a beautiful location, the memorials are very interesting, and it is a very peaceful environment.

We have been going to this cemetery numerous times during my lifetime, as my g-g-grandparents, aunts & uncles are buried here. Many times I too took my dog Millie who enjoyed laying in the shade of the trees or monuments watching the people, birds, squirrels and rabbits while I was cleaning stones or taking pictures.

The people I have met, or just passed, in the cemetery acknowledged us by a wave or a nod of the head. One day I was attempting to straighten a stone and a gentleman stopped to see if he could help.

I hope you and your friends will please consider going back to St. LouisCemetery again, and pray you may have a better experience.

Beautiful cemetery, but the locals are very unfriendly towards non-locals.

A few friends and myself traveled over an hour to visit this cemetery on a Sunday afternoon. The monuments are gorgeous, and we had planned to explore the grounds, take photos of the scenery, and do a bit of historical and genealogical research. We were very quiet and respectful of the cemetery, despite seeing many of the residents treat it as nothing more than a dog park. Within less than an hour of our arrival, a middle-aged man in a tee shirt accosted us. He had no badge and no uniform, but claimed to be a law enforcement officer and urged us to leave, giving no reason whatsoever. I'd like to add that there were no signs posted stating hours or loitering rules or notice of private property.

In short, we traveled over an hour from Indianapolis to enjoy a public historical landmark, only to be rudely told to leave. If you're into researching headstones or photographing monuments and want a more welcoming environment, I highly recommend Crown Hill up in Indianapolis instead.
